Meth Addiction And Abuse

Methamphetamine, or “meth” (sometimes referred to as “crystal meth”), is a class of amphetamines that is sometimes used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and obesity in the United States. It is banned in Canada, and its medical use is limited in the United States, because of how severe its effects can be. It is more addictive than almost every other drug.

Meth is sometimes referred to as “speed” because its primary effect is to speed up the central nervous system. The rush of euphoria that it brings is accompanied by some uncomfortable feelings: chest pain, a racing heart, gastrointestinal problems and a dry mouth.  Users have to take increasing amounts of the drug to achieve the euphoric effect, and withdrawal can make them develop headaches, feelings of depression and difficulty breathing.

Crystal meth addiction is extremely damaging to the person affected and to his or her loved ones. It causes symptoms of psychosis including hallucinations and paranoid delusions, and users can display sudden intense bouts of violence. Addicts and their family members should seek immediate help from a facility that offers meth addiction treatment.
